What’s happening — and why it matters
PROVE Act: Would deny non‑military expats the right to vote in their home state unless they maintain a current U.S. residence (their own or that of a spouse/parent/guardian). Those who cannot would be treated as if they live in Washington, D.C. — no senators and only a non‑voting House delegate.
SAVE Act: Would require burdensome, in‑person proof of citizenship to register. In practice, many overseas citizens could be forced to travel back to the U.S. simply to remain on the rolls. This bill has already passed the House and is pending in the Senate.
Bottom line: Together, these proposals could disenfranchise millions of Americans abroad. Our votes count — and our voices need to be heard.
